Historical Accounts

-Site Navigator-

Throughout history, there have been countless documented accounts of UFO sightings and other-worldly visitors. Often, these accounts were not recorded as UFO's or aliens, but as strange phenomenon that occured without explanation, the work of gods or demons, mass hallucination, mental disorder, etc...The mind-set of the observer has often largely influenced the way such an event is relayed and perceived by others, as with most subjects. One example might be the star or angel that led the wisemen to Jesus's birthplace. What was this bright object in the sky? Was it an angel, a comet, a UFO, or perhaps Venus (as many UFO sightings today are brushed off as the planet Venus). Who can say for sure? Not I, but this just goes to show how when one has predetermined views of what is and what isn't, the true essence of a given event or subject may not be fully understood, if at all. We seem to have a habit of assuming we are at the center of the universe, we are all there is, and that our technology is the height of scientific technology. Simply put, at times we think we know it all. This attitude can and has lead to many misinterpretations of past events, by those with closed minds. Ignorance in itself, is not a crime, but when one chooses to remain ignorant, the fault falls on the individual. We have often twisted events to fit into our own view of things, and some have even made up explanations for things they didn't understand.

One of the first documentations of possible UFO's, comes from Egypt more then 3000 years ago:

"In the year twenty-two of the third month of the winter, a circle of fire appeared in the sky. After some days, it became more numerous and shown with the brightness of the sun, extending to the very limits of the heavens."
(Pharaoh Thutmoses III, 1480 b.c.e.)

Alexander the Great had two UFO encounters that were recorded. During his invasion of Asia in 329, while crossing a river, Alexander and his men saw what was described as gleaming, silver shields in the sky. The objects repeatedly swooped down at the soldiers, scattering men and horses and creating quite a panic. Seven years later, while attacking a Venesian city in the eastern Mediterranean, observers on both sides of the conflict reported another incredible event. Objects appeared in the sky. One of the objects suddenly shot a beam of light at the city wall, crumbling it to dust. This allowed Alexander's troops to easily take the city.

General Douglas MacArthur was quoted in The New York Times,(Oct.9, 1955), concerning alien visitors. MacArthur voiced his concerns that the nations of Earth must soon "make a common front against attack by people from other planets." He warned that the next war would be an interplanetary one. Later, while addressing the 1962 graduating class at West Point, MacArthur made the following statements: "We deal now not with things of this world alone. We deal now with the ultimate conflict between a united human race and the sinister forces of some other planetary galaxy." In 1958, Dr. Wernher von Braun was quoted in West German newspapers about the peculiar malfunction of the United States' Juno II rocket. Dr. Braun, a brilliant German-born rocket scientist, stated that the rocket had gone off course as if it had been deflected. He also stated that "we find ourselves faced by powers that are far stronger than we had ever hitherto assumed, and whose base of operations is at present unknown to us. We are now entering into closer contact with these powers and soon it may be possible to speak with more precision in the matter." Both of these men may have indicated their awareness of an alien presence, on some level.

The 1940's

The 1940's were a time of extraordinary UFO events. First off, most notable, we have the famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold on June 24, 1947, near Mt. Rainier. While flying a search mission over the Cascade mountain range, to look for a downed Marine Corps. transport plane, Arnold reported seeing a series of about nine objects flying in a "V" formation. He described these objects as "flat like a pie pan and so shiny they reflected the sun like a mirror," and flying like "a saucer would if you skipped it across the water." News reports picked up on this, and thus, the term "flying saucer" was born.

Then, there is the famous Roswell, New Mexico crash in July of 1947. Some believe this incident to be the trigger for the governments "denial and cover-up" attitude towards UFO's. So many versions of this story exist, that it's hard to separate fact from fiction. The main things that remain constant in most of the stories are that, a UFO crashed on a ranch just outside of Roswell, non-human bodies are discovered, the papers put out a report that the government has captured a flying saucer, then the next day, the military issues a report denying the claims, saying something to the effect of ,"oops...sorry, we made a mistake. Just a weather balloon folks." Many still believe that intelligence officer, Jesse Marcel, would not have mistaken a weather balloon for an alien craft. This is the first case to involve claims of military threats to silence civilians who saw or knew too much. Because of the fact that the military has changed their story several times, as to what really occured, most feel this is evidence of a cover-up, on at least some level. What are they hiding, if not a UFO? Their latest claim, that the bodies discovered were just six foot crash-test dummies, is viewed as the most ridiculous yet. Most wonder how a four foot, mutilated corpse could turn into a six foot plastic dummy? For more on the Roswell crash, visit: Karen Lyster's Roswell Page

Five years earlier, on February 25, 1942, an air raid was conducted over the city of Los Angeles, which may have been in response to a giant UFO. This was just two months after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, so the U.S. was prepared for another attack. A black-out was ordered for the city, between the hours of 2:25 a.m. to 7:21 a.m.. Some 2000 rounds of twelve-pound high-explosive shells were fired that night. The U.S. Army denied that any fighter planes were launched, but reliable witnesses stated otherwise. Witnesses reported that the U.S. Army bombarded an object with gunfire from fighter planes and ground troops, for nearly half an hour before the object casually flew out of sight. A news photograph showed a large, round, white object at the center of about nine searchlight beams. The object never retaliated and seemed totally unharmed by the attack on it. Six people died that night as a result of the raid, due to shell fragments and such, raining down on the homes below.

On January 7, 1948, Captain Thomas Mantell was killed while in pursuit of a UFO. Or was he? Kentucky Highway Patrol contacted the control tower at Godman Field Air Base, to confirm reports of a large object seen flying over Maysville. The tower responded "negative", but then did spot something. At around the same time, four P-51's were seen approaching the Godman Field. Mantell was the flight leader, and decided to maneuver in for a closer look. Captain Mantell's last words, as he was climbing to engage the object, were as follows. "It looks metallic, and it's tremendous in size. It's above me and I'm gaining on it. I'm going to 20,000 feet..." . Then silence. Some witnesses stated that they saw the P-51 explode in mid-air. Some reports vary slightly, but most state that his body was discovered in the wreckage with the cockpit hatch still locked shut. His watch had stopped at 3:18, which is assumed to be the time of the crash, but some speculate that his watch may have stopped due to his proximity to the unknown object. A closed-casket funeral gave more credibility to the rumors that no remains were ever recovered from the wreckage.

Antonio Villas Boas

Antonio Villas Boas was a Brazilian farmer. On October 16, 1957, at age 23, Villas Boas had an experience that may have been one of the first modern day abduction claims. His story was not publicized until 1964 and he also never profited from it. Villas Boas claimed that at about 1:00 a.m., he was out operating a tractor on the family farm when he spotted a bright light in the sky, which he had also noticed on a previous night. This time the object descended and as it neared the ground, three telescopic legs outstretched and the ufo landed. Villas Boas's tractor died and he became scared and decided to run on foot. Then a being of about five feet tall, grabbed him and in a frightened state, he pushed the being to the ground. He proceeded to run when he was stopped by three more beings who then took him into their craft. He claimed that every time he tried to yell, they would stop and look at him very curiously. He also said that they didn't speak really, but instead used grunting or growling-like tones. Once on board, he found himself in a small, cold, square room with no appearent seams. Then he said he was stripped down and coated with some kind of gel. He was taken into another room with a bed-like structure that had a strange hump in the middle. He was left alone in the room and after about a half an hour, a strange fog and odor began to fill the room. The odor was sickening, and Villas Boas was forced to vomit. After some time, a very humanoid female entered the room, naked. Some speculate that the fog or odor may have been to condition the air for the female, since he claimed the others who he saw were in some sort of space suits. She was under five feet tall with blond, almost white hair. He said she was almost completely human looking except for a very angular face, pointed at the chin and somewhat larger eyes, almost cat-like. He found himself aroused and eventually, they had intercourse. When it was over, before leaving, she rubbed her belly and pointed to the sky as if to say she would carry his child. He was then given his clothes back and given a short tour of their craft. Then, he was returned to the field near his house. When he arrived home, he discovered that over four hours had passed.

Villas Boas never changed his story and recalled all of the details without the use of hypnosis. When examined by Dr. Olavo Fontes of APRO, he was found to be okay mentally but seemed to suffer from weakness, nausea, and bleeding lesions, attributed to mild radiation poisoning. At the time, many claimed that Villas Boas was nothing short of a fraud, while others argued that he was rather poorly educated and couldn't have fabricated all the details of his story. Antonio Villas Boas died in 1992.

The Barney and Betty Hill Story

Barney, a mail carrier, and Betty, a social worker, were returning home one night from a short vacation, on September 19, 1961, when they suddenly spotted a bright object in the sky. Barney stopped the car and used a pair of binoculars to get a better look at the object. He could make out a disk-like object moving strangely in the night sky. He then walked into a nearby field, for a closer look. He could then make out small structures that looked somewhat like windows. To his astonishment, he noticed beings looking back at him, through the windows. This frightened him, and he ran back to his car and they proceeded to drive away. They drove down a side road and saw five humanoid aliens blocking their path. They were then taken from their car and led into a UFO, in a trance-like state. Most of their encounter was uncovered while under hypnosis, for when they arrived home, they had discovered nearly two hours had been missing, and they remembered almost nothing from the event. They were disturbed by strange dreams and the foreboding feeling that something extraordinary had occured during those two hours. While under hypnosis, the Hills both told similar stories of being taken into a craft of some kind, and subjected to several physical and mental examinations. Betty also claimed to be shown a star map while on board. In 1964, while under hypnosis, Betty drew a remarkable recreation of the star map that concurred with other professionally drawn maps. She also indicated the location of two stars called Zeta 1 and Zeta 2 Reticuli, in which she said was the aliens home base. The amazing part is that the existence of these two stars wasn't confirmed until 1969 and Betty had no understanding of astronomy, to make such a map.

Bob Lazar

Robert Scott Larar, better known to the UFO community as Bob Lazar, claims to have worked on an alien craft for the U.S. Government at Area 51. Lazar's story starts in June of 1982, where he claims to have met Dr. Edward Teller, before a lecture. At this time, Lazar supposedly worked for Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. In 1988, after leaving Los Alamos, Lazar wrote a letter to Teller and mentioned he was job hunting. He soon received a call from Dr. Teller, followed by a call for an interview at EG&G (Edger, Germeshausen & Grier) Special Projects. Lazar says he was interviewed and hired by agents from the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). He initially believed he was hired for work on an advanced propulsion system, and later heard that he was to replace one of three scientists who had been killed in an attempt to cut into an alien power plant reactor. Lazar claims that he was actually hired to study and reverse-engineer the power plant from an alien craft. The location of his place of work was S-4, sometimes referred to as Dreamland, the Ranch, or Skunk Works, about fifteen miles south of Area 51. According to Lazar, S-4 consisted of a complex facility with serveral hangers built into the side of a mountain.

To prepare him for his new job, he says he was required to read some 200 pages of briefing documents. Bob claims that within these blue booklets was information regarding the aliens and their technology, along with other supposed secret government projects. Some of these projects included the study of gravity drive, referred to as "Galileo", looking back in time, known as "Looking Glass", and a neutron beam weapon codenamed "Sidekick". All of these projects were said to be under a program called "Project Overview". According to the documents, aliens have been visiting Earth for a millennia and they refer to it as Sol 3. They claim that man is the result of 65 genetic corrections made over thousands of years. One group of aliens, referred to as "The Kids", came from the Zeta Reticuli star system. The documents stated that religion was given to man so he would have rules and regulations for the purpose of not damaging the containers. The "container" would refer to our physical bodies, but it is uncertain whether they referred to us as containers for the soul, or containers of DNA.

According to Bob, he worked at S-4 from December of 1988, to April of 1989. He claims to have worked on one of nine alien crafts stored in hangers there. He says the alien craft's power source was a matter/antimatter reactor, similar to our nuclear reactors but about the size of a soccer ball. This reactor produced waves that nullified gravity through the use of a super-heavy substance, he named Element 115, after its theoretical atomic number. Lazar said that one of the saucers looked like it had been hit by a large caliber projectile because it had a hole that ran from the bottom, up through the top with the metal bent outward. He claims to have also witnessed a short test flight of one of the crafts. Lazar's clearance was supposedly denied because he was viewed as a security risk when a tapped phoneline revealed he was having marital problems. Prior to leaving his work at S-4, Lazar took five friends to the mountains surrounding Area 51 to watch the lights of UFO's being flown there.

It's hard to evaluate Lazar's incredible claims. EG&G and Los Alamos National Laboratory have stated that they never heard of him, although a 1982 Los Alamos laboratory internal phone book lists "Robert Lazar" along with other scientists. Other employees have been found that have confirmed that Bob had worked with them at Los Alamos on top-secret work, concerning the SDI Star Wars project. Lazar has also been able to produce a W-2 Wage and Tax Statement for 1989. It shows the employer as United States Department of Naval Intelligence, Washington D.C., and an OMB identification number listed as E-6722MAJ. Following several death threats and a supposed shooting attempt, Lazar decided to go public with his story, in order to protect himself. He figured that once the information was out there, he would be left alone. He felt that they did not do things for revenge, but only to keep the information hidden in the first place. It would be too obvious if something were to happen to him, after he went public. Many believe that Lazar's education and work records have been intentionally destroyed, altered or hidden, because even the school he claims to have attended, has no record of him. Others think that he is a total fraud who wanted the spotlight for a time. Others think that he may have been used to leak certain information to the public as a plan to prepare us for the truth. Whatever the case, the only logical thing that anyone could do to Lazar after he told his story, would be to discredit him in any way possible so no one would believe him. Many argue that this has been accomplished.

Mexico, 1991 Eclipse

In 1991, as thousands of citizens in Mexico stared up into the sky at the eclipse, something unusual was spotted. Countless people claim to have witnessed, for lack of a better term, what can only be described as a UFO. Jaime Maussan was born in Mexico City, and earned a B.A. degree in radio and television from the Miami University in Ohio. He has had a 25 year career in the media and has received several awards. He is now General Director and Anchorman of "60 Minutes" Mexico. After the 1991 Eclipse, he received a video tape of the event that showed a strange, silver disk hovering over the city. Maussan then asked his viewers to share any unusual sightings they might have had during the eclipse. To his and everyone elses amazement, 15 different video tapes, from different locations around the city and from different individuals, were produced. No one was prepared for what may be considered some of the best video evidence collected so far. Since then, Maussan has compiled over 5,000 videos and photos from eyewitnesses. This could be one of the largest collections of UFO videos in the world. He also produces a radio program "Jaime Maussan, UFOs and other Mysteries", which is a very popular show in Mexico. This story has also appeared on several U.S. programs such as SIGHTINGS. The 1991 eclipse marked one of the most intense and sustained UFO flaps on record to date. Countless individuals have recorded the same or similar objects on video since and the residence of Mexico (and the rest of the world for that matter) have yet to receive an explaination as to just what these "disks" are and what they are doing there. This remains being just one more piece of evidence that can't be easily swept under the rug and ignored. Most investigators agree that something is or at least was going on there, and many demand to know what, to no avail.

Manhattan Island Abduction

Also known as the Brooklyn Bridge Abduction, this case has been given much attention due to the amount of subsequent witnesses that have come forward since. This story starts in April of 1989, with a 45 year old, New Yorker named Linda Cortile, who contacted Bud Hopkins because she suspected that she may have been abducted in her twenties. Then, in late November of that year, she was apparently abducted again, this time with multiple witnesses. Linda's story is that she had gone to bed at around 3 am, when she began to feel a paralyzing numbness, starting at her feet, then moving up her body. The sensation was familiar to her and she attributed it to the abduction experience. Her husband had already been to sleep and all attempts to wake him failed. Then three or four beings appeared in the room and she was floated through her closed, 12th storey apartment window and into a craft hovering overhead, in a blue beam of light. After a medical exam, she was literally dropped back into her bed, which still did not wake her sleeping husband. A large portion of her story was uncovered by Bud Hopkins, while under hypnosis, which causes many skeptics to take note and try to discredit this case.

Then there are the witnesses. First, Hopkins recieved a letter from two men claiming to be police officers, in February of 1991. They claimed that they had witnessed what could only be described as an alien abduction, from under the FDR Drive, where their car had broke down. They called themselves Dan and Richard. After she was abducted, they claimed that the UFO flew into the East River. After 45 minutes, the object had still not surfaced. Hopkins was later informed by one of the gentlemen, that the reason they could not meet with him in person was because the two men were actually Secret Service agents that had been taking the then, Security General of the United Nations - Perez de Cuellar, to a heliport when their limousine broke down. Then in November of 1991, Hopkins recieved a letter, and drawings from a women in her sixties, he calls Janet Kimble. She claimed that on the night of the Cortile abduction, she had been crossing the Brooklyn Bridge when her car and all the lights on the bridge failed. She said that she witnessed the women and a small group of beings, float up into a brightly lit UFO. Linda's apartment can be seen from both locations and the accounts and drawings from Dan and Richard and Janet Kimble, seemed to match on several major and minor details. Bud Hopkins has since released a book entitled, Witnessed-The true story of the Brooklyn Bridge UFO Abductions.

Is there something else that could explain the phenomenon associated with UFO's and aliens, other than other-worldly visitors? Can abduction reports, crop circles, strange lights in the sky, cattle mutilations, the removal of strange, unidentifiable foreign objects from abductees, strange scares, missing pregnancies, telepathic communications from unseen entities, etc...be explained by some other means we are not yet aware of? Or are they all just small pieces of the big puzzle? If so, will we ever have enough pieces to see the whole picture, clearly? This is just a small sample of the events that have been reported to have taken place over the last century and beyond. There are many, many others and more will be added later, as more data is gathered.
